CAFTA, the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, was officially launched. Among ASEAN countries, Thailand's automotive industry has developed remarkably in the past decade. Before the 1997 financial crisis in Southeast Asia, Malaysia was a major ASEAN car producer, leading Thailand in car production and exports, but after the crisis Thai cars quickly grew to become the largest ASEAN car producer and exporter. At present, Thailand has become an ASEAN automobile production base, car production accounted for 40% of the total output in Southeast Asia, enjoy the "Southeast Asia Detroit" called.
Both Malaysia and Indonesia are committed to developing their own automotive industries, with government-protected domestic projects such as Pentium in Malaysia and Timor in Indonesia. Since the 1990s, the Thai government has been steadfast in its open-car policy, encouraging foreign investors to invest in thailand to build factories. The automotive industry is now Thailand's third-largest, employing 300,000 people and generating annual sales of $28.34 million, or 12% of the country's GDP. In 2009, Thailand was the world's 10th largest auto exporter, accounting for 0.9 per cent of global automotive exports, and has the largest vehicle assembly capacity and component production capacity in the ASEAN region, providing 80 per cent of the components required for local truck assembly and 60 per cent for bus assembly.
The Thai Auto Parts Exhibition (TAPA) is one of the most influential and innovative auto parts fairs in Asia, co-sponsored by the Export Promotion Office of the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand and the Thai Automobile Parts Manufacturers Association, and supported by local governments and some automotive industry associations. The exhibition is held at the BIOTEC (Bangkok International Trade Expo Centre) on the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand. Last year, the main exhibitors from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Singapore, South Korea, Rubin, China and other places, a total of more than 400 exhibitors, exhibition area of nearly 20,000 square meters, from 64 countries with 22,000 visitors.
The quality of the buyers at the exhibition is relatively high. Mainly from Iran and other Arab buyers and India, Malaysia, Indonesia and other Asian countries. Brake system products (e.g. brake discs, brake pads), automotive electronics (such as GPS navigators, car audio players), automotive cylinder liners, automotive motor products and other products are popular at the exhibition site.
